In Brief: The International Olympic Committee, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Qatar Olympic Committee, will hold the 9th World Conference on Sport and the Environment from 30 April to 1 May 2011 in Doha, Qatar. Under the theme of “Playing for a Greener Future”, the Conference will assess the environmental success stories of the Olympic Movement; reflect on future challenges; and explore new opportunities of mainstreaming the environment in the world of sport.
Some of the questions to be discussed are: “How can the Olympic Movement contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals which also relate to environmental sustainability?”, “How can sporting role models convey environmental messages at national level?” and “Which inspiring solutions to global environmental issues can be offered by the world of sport?”.
A highlight will be the presentation of the 2011 IOC Sport and Environment Awards, which recognise outstanding initiatives in the field of sustainable sport and environment.
