Vodafone Qatar and BQFP announce scholarships for writers’ institute

Under Vodafone Qatar’s Corporate Responsibility strategy “Better World”, the Company will be offering 8 scholarships for female writers in Qatar to register in the Mini – Master of Fine Arts  (MFA) writing institute offered by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP).

The Mini MFA scholarships are a result of the funds raised by the sale of the “Vodafone Women in Qatar: The Inside Story”, a collection of stories written by female employees and spouses of Vodafone whose lives have been changed as a result of establishing Vodafone in Qatar, published by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation in April 2010.

“The purpose of the book was to create a “Writer’s World Fund”, a fund for the development and support of aspiring and working female writers in Qatar. We are so glad to see the dream become a reality and that we will help potential female writers in Qatar have their voice heard,” said Luisa Gentile, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Vodafone Qatar.

The Mini Master is part of the 3rd annual Summer Writing Institute held by BQFP from May 29 2011 until June 2 2011 and is a weeklong intensive course designed for writers who are interested in developing their craft in fiction, non-fiction, or poetry with a group of other participants and a professional instructor. Sessions will run daily from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM at the Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar building at Qatar Foundation.

“We are delighted that this programme has grown to offer creative support in two languages. Writers need a community and BQFP is proud to promote that for the greater Doha community,” said Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar, BQFP Reading and Writing Development Director.

To be considered for the scholarship, female participants must register via the BQFP website www.bqfp.com.qa and mention scholarship applicant in their writing sample. Any female residents of Qatar 18 years and older are invited to apply. Applications can be submitted either in English or Arabic by 25 May 2011.

The public can still contribute to the “Writer’s World Fund” by purchasing the “Vodafone Women in Qatar: The Inside Story” book at Vodafone’s Online store www.vodafone.com.qa.
