MEDCO acquires a new Dredger Vessel ‘Al Jarraf’

‘Middle East Dredging Company Q.S.C.’ (MEDCO) announced the successful takeover of the Al Jarraf, a new heavy duty suction dredger in Singapore Shipyard on the 20th July 2011. The new vessel will provide MEDCO with a powerful, competitive tool for future projects across the Gulf and beyond.

Mr. Abdulrahman Abdullah Abdulghani

The Al Jarraf vessel, has been successfully tested, commissioned and handed over; and the vessel is now ready to be mobilized globally to any future dredging projects.

MEDCO’s Chairman Mr. Abdulrahman Abdullah Abdulghani said; “We are thrilled that the Al Jarraf vessel has become part of the MEDCO Fleet. The vessel will undoubtedly be a key component in a number of upcoming major projects in the Gulf and World Wide, including the New Doha Port Project and Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Project in Qatar.

In addition to the capability of dredging the sea bed at depths of 30m, Al Jarraf has several essential characteristics, which are particularly crucial for assignments in the Gulf region. The dredger is heavy duty with 12.860 kW of total installed power; it is a self propelled Vessel capable of sailing overseas without any powerful towing tugboats.

The 102 x 21 meter dredger can pump dredged material over very long distances and Al Jarraf has an integrated barge loading facility which provides extra flexibility allowing Al Jarraf to discharge through the traditional floating pipeline or directly into a barge that would moor alongside the dredger.

MEDCO is a partnership between United Development Company’ (UDC), Qatar Holding, and the Belgian ‘Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering’ group (DEME), one of the leading dredging companies in the World. MEDCO focuses on capital dredging, port development and land reclamation and operates a proprietary fleet of modern dredging vessels of various types.
