Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is holding an art competition on the idea of “Transformation” for all schools in Qatar during April and May 2012. Schools are invited to submit artworks created by K-12 students. The museum is currently doing outreach to encourage schools to participate, so that students can create artworks before the submission period from 13 – 26 of May.
Inspired by the artworks on view in the exhibition “Cai Guo-Qiang: Saraab”, students are asked to think of the meaning of the word “transform”, and create their own artwork in this spirit. Mathaf hopes to inspire students to think outside the box, and create something new which transforms an idea, material, or object. Students are also asked to document the process in order to share with the community their reflections of the experience.

Community engagement is central to Mathaf’s objectives. The competition is open to all schools in Qatar. Artworks must be submitted through a designated point person in each school before the deadline on May 26 in order to be considered. Applications are available online at www.mathaf.org.qa for schools to download, or by emailing mathaf_education@qma.org.qa.
The competition will be judged by a panel comprised of museum staff and community members, and will cover five age categories from grades K-12. Artworks selected will be featured in Mathaf’s first student art exhibition, which will open in fall 2012 with a special reception for students and their families.
