HMC to use robots in brain surgery

HMC to use robots in brain surgery

The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) will soon start using robots in complicated brain surgeries, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday.

By using robots, brain surgeries can be conducted with more precision with minimal impact on the brain cells. The recovery will also be faster and the patients can be discharged earlier compared to the conventional surgeries, the daily said, quoting HMC sources.

Robots will also be used to take samples of tumors in the brain for laboratory tests.

Since its introduction in November 2008, the surgical robot is increasingly being used at HMC for conducting highly precise surgeries on parts of the human body that are difficult for the surgeon’s hands to reach, such as the pelvis, below the diaphragm, the urinary tract and the cervix.

The most recent application of the surgical robot was to conduct surgeries in the mouth and neck with high precision and minimal operating time. The ENT Department has successfully used the surgical robot for the management of snoring.
