Msheireb Downtown Doha wins Best Sustainable Development Award at Cityscape

Msheireb Properties, Qatar’s leading sustainable real estate developer, won the Award for best Mixed Use Project at the first Cityscape Qatar. Msheireb Properties earned the award for its flagship development Msheireb Downtown Doha, the QR20 billion regeneration of Doha’s historical commercial centre.

Receiving the award before industry colleagues at a special gala dinner on the opening day of Cityscape Qatar, Eng Issa M Al Mohannadi, CEO of Msheireb Properties, said: “We’re delighted to receive this award, as it further endorses our investment in sustainable urban development. We see the Msheireb Downtown Doha project as a template for the sustainable urban growth of modern cities everywhere, not only as a flagship regeneration of part of our capital city..”

Held at the Four Seasons Hotel, the first Cityscape Qatar Awards recognised outstanding Middle East-based projects, both completed and those in the development stage, in seven categories: Commercial & Retail, Residential, Mixed Use, Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality, Public Sector, and Sustainable Development.

A jury of handpicked industry experts selected Msheireb Downtown Doha in the sustainability category due to its “outstanding commitment to sustainability in terms of design, development and construction, and the innovative use of new materials, products and construction methods delivering high levels of energy efficiency.”

On completion, Msheireb Downtown Doha will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 110,000 tons per year compared with the emissions of a conventional urban development of a similar size. That is equal to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 18,277 passenger vehicles consuming 42,877,121 litres of gasoline.

Msheireb Downtown Doha will be the world’s largest certified sustainable community, with around 100 buildings meeting the LEED Gold standard for environmental performance and some buildings attaining a Platinum rating. The construction work currently underway also meets an unusually high level of sustainability, with operations already in place that are minimising carbon emissions and achieving savings on energy and resources. Following our very successful involvement in MIPIM in Cannes earlier this year, Cityscape Qatar has provided another great platform to showcase the sustainability credentials of our flagship project to the local market.”
