Four finals, four QSports champions, one action packed day

The Sharks basketball team’s thrilling win over Sustainable Energy concluded an enthralling day of action and excitement in Al Wakra as season 2 of the QSports Leagues concluded with their grand finals day on June 15, 2012.

QSports Basketball Al Wakra Finals

Over the last 10 weeks, over 1,100 athletes took part in various sports organized by QSports–Qatar’s premier social sports organization with over 2,000 active sports enthusiasts/members.

The Championship finals saw 4 champions awarded trophies, medals and prizes; Rawal County won the Cricket league, Stenden University won the outdoor football league, Captain Majid were crowned indoor soccer champions while the Sharks victory in the basketball final sealed the day before a crowd of 350 people at the Al Wakra Sports Club Indoor Hall.

Adil Ahmed – Chief organizer of QSports explained “It was fantastic to have so many sports teams playing their final matches at the same event – it meant sports fans were split for choice in being able to watch exciting basketball or soccer matches”.

The outdoor soccer final was decided on penalties after a 0-0 game between Latin United F.C. and Stenden University, Stenden University held their nerve in the penalties winning 4-2.

Captain Majid United in the indoor soccer league proved to be worthy winners – having played some fantastic games throughout the season – they were tipped by many to be the champions and their victory in the final over FC Khyber confirmed their season long dominance in the league with the final score 3-2.

Meanwhile the basketball final proved the game of the night with a huge crowd enjoying the end to end action. The 3rd place was claimed by the talented staff basketball team of Newton International School beating Team Layup. Qasim Khalid – QSports organizing committee said ‘it was an incredible atmosphere in the stadium, with the crowd really enjoying the game – it was great to see us building on the success of our Women’s Basketball finals and proved to be a fitting final game of the season’

Representatives from the Qatar Olympic Committee and league sponsors Go Sports and ILoveQatar.net were on hand to present the medals and trophies to the finalists. Mr Khalil Al Jaber, Director General of the Sports Affairs Department at the Qatar Olympic Committee said that “QOC will continue to support the QSports initiative in the coming year and foresees as strong working relationship between the QOC and QSports. Sports tournaments and leagues among community based teams should be encouraged and QSports is perfectly placed to execute these tournaments, he added.

QSports Season 3 will commence in September 2012 and is open to all residents of Qatar. Teams and individuals can register at www.qsportsleagues.com.
