International Gulf Trading Company (IGTC)-Chubb Fire Qatar – the country’s leading supplier of fire safety equipment and security solutions – has announced the signing of a contract to supply a suite of fire fighting and suppression equipment at the New Doha International Airport (NDIA).
Qatar’s sole current international airport in Doha has been suffering for some time with a lack of capacity and NDIA is designed primarily to deal with the growing volume of traffic – both passengers and freight – arriving in or passing through Qatar.
NDIA is scheduled to open in December of this year when it will be able to handle 29 million passengers a year, three times as many as the current airport capacity. Upon completion, it will be able to handle 50 million passengers. The airport is being given oasis theming and many of the buildings will be water-themed, with waved roofs and desert plants being grown in recycled water.
It goes without saying that such a construction – where highly flammable liquids and heavy machinery will be in use 24 hours a day – be made as fireproof as possible, and this is where IGTC-Chubb Fire Qatar’s expertise is being sought. A construction of the size and prestige of NDIA will also require numerous Automated People Mover Systems around the airport and Austrian company DCC Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH & Co Qatar has been tasked with these works. Doppelmayr, in turn, has signed a contract with IGTC-Chubb Fire Qatar to make their areas of responsibility within NDIA fireproof.

IGTC-Chubb Fire Qatar will be equipping two areas, one of which is being used for ‘laydown’ (an area for the temporary storage of equipment and supplies) with a range of specialist fire equipment. The scope of work required is the supply, installation, testing and final commissioning of a pre-action system, fire hose cabinets, and the FM200 fire suppression system.
The pre-action system consists of all necessary equipment, valves and accessories required for connection to the water-based firefighting system, as well as a control panel for operational purposes, and the fire hose cabinets are the last piece in this particular arrangement.
The FM200 system, designed by US giant DuPont, is the world’s ‘gold standard’ fire suppression system, in use in tens of thousands of facilities in more than 70 countries. It fights fires quickly (the system reaches extinguishing levels in 10 seconds or less) through automatic deployment of the patented FM200 agent, and can safely be used where people are present. When fire is extinguished this quickly, it means less damage, lower repair costs, and an extra margin of safety for people. It also means less downtime and disruption of business.
IGTC-Chubb Fire Qatar’s General Manager, Rami Batrawi, commented, “Securing a contract with as reputable a company as DCC Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH & Co Qatar is a major plus for this company and an added bonus is the venue of the works we are going to carry out. Simply put, the New Doha International Airport is vital to the future of Qatar and it’s an honour – and very exciting – that we’re going to make a contribution to that.
“IGTC-Chubb Fire Qatar has once again been recognised as this country’s foremost fire safety experts and we continue to secure important contracts that help us to make Qatar a safer place,” he added.
