Mowasalat, Qatar’s public transport company, has launched two single use tariff cards. The new smart cards called ‘Smartcard 24 Hours Limited’ and ‘Smartcard 24 Hours Unlimited’ are available at QR10 and QR20 respectively and are valid for 24 hours.
The new cards will be available in all major shopping malls and 71 Mowasalat partner merchants across the country. Mowasalat is also offering commuters a QR10 bonus when they top up their existing ‘Smartcard Classic’ with QR100.
Chairman and Managing Director of Mowasalat Jassim Saif al Sulaiti said, “Mowasalat has launched these cards after a detailed study based on the feedback received from customers. We hope that many people will avail themselves of these offers on Karwa Smart cards as we are considering to make the offers permanent depending on the response from the customers.”
Mowasalat’s Executive Director Engineer Ahmed al Mansoori said, “We are certain that the bonus on the top-up will be welcomed by our customers. Mowasalat will continue to be responsive to both the developments taking place in the country and the needs of the people that we serve in the public transport sector.”

While the existing rechargeable Smartcard Classic costs QR30 and is valid for life, the new disposable cards can only be used within 24 hours of purchase. The Smartcard 24 Hours Limited is a smart replacement for the “no-card feesingle- trip” for which commuters were charged QR10 before. With the new card, however, customers can enjoy two trips within Doha city.
The Smartcard 24 Hours Unlimited gives customers opportunity to enjoy as many rides as they can to anywhere in Qatar within 24 hours.
Mowasalat Director of Strategy and Business Development Department Nasser al Khanji said, “Our loyal customers can expect more promotions from Karwa as we partner with more brands to inject more values and excitements into our Karwa Smartcard products as well as our bus services as a whole.” Karwa Smartcard is a technology introduced by Mowasalat in November of 2010. It has replaced the cash-based bus payment system to create fully-automated cashless payment system.
