H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa celebrates Garangaou at HMC Leukemia Center

Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) Chairperson Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani celebrated the joy of Garangaou with patients at the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Leukemia Center as part of ROTA’s Ramadan 2012 Project, sponsored by Occidental Petroleum of Qatar Ltd.  (Oxy Qatar).

H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa and ROTA volunteers joined a large group of Leukemia Center staff and patients for the traditional Qatari celebration as children dressed in costume, enjoyed fun activities, exchanged gifts of bags filled with sweets and nuts, and sang traditional Garangaou songs.

Praising Her Excellency, a HMC spokesperson said: “We thank H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa and all the ROTA volunteers who visited the Leukemia Center, celebrating Garangaou with staff and patients, and helping to sustain Qatari culture.” 

“Her Excellency’s visit to the HMC Leukemia Center reflects ROTA’s belief in the importance of social interaction and our commitment to help build a healthy community at all levels,” says ROTA Executive Director Mr. Essa Al Mannai.

The Holy Month 2012 is witnessing Reach Out To Asia’s largest ever Ramadan Project as ROTA joins forces with Oxy Qatar for an extensive programme of community activities – distributing groceries to hundreds of families in need, celebrating Iftar with special needs children & orphans and well as Elderly people; and completing home makeovers for impoverished families. 

“Oxy Qatar is proud to support the wonderful Garangaou tradition,” says  President and GM, Mr. Steve Kelly. “Ramadan in Qatar is a special time, with the whole community coming together to share and celebrate the rituals and values of the Holy Month.”
