HBKU to host a Film Series on Climate Change as part of its COP 18 efforts

Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Student Center Cinema is hosting a series of films on the topic of climate change on September 12^th and 26^th, and on October 10^thand 24^th. The film series is the first initiative as part of HBKU’s efforts for COP 18, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) summit, which is planned to take place this November in Qatar.

As part of its larger initiative, HBKU is seeking to educate its students and the wider Qatar community on the various issues associated with the human-led impacts of modernization. Each of the films screened will have messages centered on the challenges of climate change and how each individual can take action to help reduce these challenges.

The first film to be screened as part of the series will be the Academy Award-winning documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth”. The film showcases former United States Vice President Al Gore‘s campaign to educate citizens about global warming. It focuses on the realities of the climate crisis, the scientific opinion on climate change as well as the present and future effects of global warming.

Other documentary films to be screened will be “The 11^th Hour”, “The Age of Stupid”, and “Everything’s Cool”. Along with the film series, HBKU is also collaborating with the Conference of Youth (COY) to hostan international gathering of young leaders prior to the UN Climate Talks COP 18. The conference will be held at HBKU Student Center.

For those looking to attend the film screenings, this event is open to the public at no additional cost and the films will be screened at 6:30 p.m. at HBKU Student Center Cinema. Educational materials on climate change will also be available for teachers who are interested in furthering classroom discussions.
