Qtel has been named “Best Telecom Company” at the Arabian Business Qatar Awards 2012 for the second year running, as the prestigious ceremony honoured the company’s efforts in helping to boost Qatar’s knowledge-based economy.
Top business executives attended the award ceremony, held on 24 September at the Grand Hyatt Doha in West Bay. The “Best Telecom Company” award was collected by Yousuf Abdulla Al Kubaisi, Chief Wholesale and International Officer, Qtel.
The award committee recognised Qtel’s efforts in rolling-out ultrafast broadband via fixed-line Qtel Fibre and mobile 4G LTE, plus the important social impact of the new mobile transfer service Mobile Money.
In particular, the launch of the test phase of 4G services was singled out by the judges as an important step forward for customers and for businesses in Qatar, bringing in a new era of mobile Internet services. The 4G LTE network will offer the best penetration in the GCC.
The committee also applauded Qtel’s corporate social responsibility programme Refaq, in which volunteers have refurbished homes and distributed vouchers for families living in poor conditions.
“We are grateful that the awards committee has recognised our efforts – for the second year in a row – in providing the best telecommunications services for the people of Qatar,” said Sheikh Saud Bin Nasser Al Thani, CEO of Qtel Qatar.
“Our ongoing programme of infrastructure investments will help customers stay in touch with friends and family, conduct business and access high- bandwidth content. We are also proud that volunteers throughout our company continue to dedicate time and energy to helping the community,” he added.
Last year, Qtel won the Telecom Company of the Year award primarily for committing to spend QR 1 billion on the new Fibre service. Fibre provides homes with high-speed Internet and high definition television with video-on-demand through Next Generation Mozaic TV.
