Al-Bairaq students get personal with RasGas engineers

More than 150 secondary school students were recently given a fascinating insight into the life and experiences of young Qatari scientists and engineers and the exciting environment of the oil and gas industry. This is part of RasGas Company Limited’s (RasGas) activities aimed at attracting young Qataris into the engineering field and support of the Al-Bairaq programme.

Held over two consecutive days at the company’s headquarters in West Bay, the interactive sessions allowed male and female Qatari students to learn about chemical, mechanical and petroleum engineering in practice. Six Qatari engineers from RasGas joined the students to share their experiences in engineering as an educational and professional career choice. The students were also provided with an overview on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry.

“RasGas recognises that engaging Qatari secondary school students from all over Qatar to learn about engineering is critical for the long-term development of their future educational and professional careers. Sessions like these are part of a larger scheme for attracting the best and brightest Qatari, and in particular female talent to the LNG industry,” said Abdulrahman Al-Mannai, Learning and Development manager at RasGas.

Al-Bairaq is a multi-faceted educational project run by the Center of Advanced Materials (CAM) at Qatar University (QU), in which students at Qatari independent high schools work in teams with the guidance of university professors and industry professionals to learn about science and apply it in practical contexts.

Students participating in these sessions were from Jassim bin Hamad Secondary School for boys; Nasser bin Abdullah Al-Attiyah Secondary School for boys (AlKhor) and Abdulla bin Ali Al-Misned Secondary School for boys. Female participants joined from the AlResala Secondary School for girls and Qatar School.

RasGas inked a platinum sponsorship agreement with QU in support of the Al-Bairaq programme for the academic year 2012-2013 in May of this year. The educational programme is designed to instill an interest in the areas of scientific, experimental and research skills among high school students in Qatar.
