High school students and their parents from around Qatar attended Discover Education City 2012 yesterday. The two day event was held at the Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Student Center and will conclude this evening.
Discover Education City (DEC) is an event for high school students, their parents and school administrators to learn about some of the valuable higher education opportunities available in Qatar. The event aims to reach out to high school students and assist them in understanding the admissions process relating to some of the universities at Education City.
Several information sessions, in both English and Arabic, were held as part of DEC’s program and at different timings to accommodate all attending. These sessions present a short introduction to Hamad bin Khalifa University, its mission and goals, before introducing some of the universities, the student life experience and the admissions requirements.
The event’s highlight was the fair where prospective students met with representatives from the universities. Students and parents were provided with background information on the various programs being taught, a couple of which are new. Current Students were also on hand to discuss their experiences with prospective students.
The branch campuses of the following universities participated in this year’s event: Virginia Commonwealth University, Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A & M University, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and Northwestern University.
Nasser A. Al-Binali, Recruitment and Outreach Coordinator at HBKU, said: “Discover Education City presents the unique education opportunities at Hamad bin Khalifa and its partner universities. Our role as recruitment coordinators is to encourage and prepare high school students embarking on the university admissions process and nurture their inborn talents so they prosper in their future careers.”
Prospective students and their parents were also strongly encouraged to learn more about Hamad bin Khalifa University Student Affairs services. The Student Affairs department held a booth offering visitors information about campus life, financial aid and scholarships.
Joseph Hernandez, Director of Admissions at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar said: “Discover Education City is the perfect opportunity for us to meet some of the best students in Qatar first-hand. We get to learn about their aspirations for the future and they get to ask us how the Georgetown experience might help them reach their goals. ”
“The turnout this year has been fantastic. It is wonderful for us to meet so many students and talk to them about the unlimited possibilities a Georgetown degree offers them. Most people don’t know that a career in Foreign Service is only one possibility for our graduates. Many of our alumni go on to work as analysts, economists, and public relations specialists working in the public and private sector industries. Others go on to graduate studies at renowned universities such as Columbia, Harvard or UCL.”
Other organizations such as Qatar Career Fair (QCF), Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) and the Academic Bridge Program (ABP) are participating in the event this year as well. Additionally, The Higher Education Institute (HEI) and Bedaya Center are also represented.
