Former Minister Of Culture HE Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari (pictured), the Qatari candidate for the secretary general position at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), said winning the 2016 Arab heritage personality of the year award is a recognition of Qatar's efforts in protecting and preserving heritage.

Speaking to QNA after landing the award that was announced Thursday in Abu Dhabi by the Arab Center for Tourism Media (ACTM), Al Kuwari said the recognition is not only an honor but also a responsibility and trust that requires carrying on not only at the domestic and Arab levels but the global one in general. He said that such recognition stresses to the world Qatar's keenness on heritage, which is one of the noble responsibilities of UNESCO, particularly during the current situation in the Arab countries such as Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Libya, which makes heritage a victim that is subject to destruction and looting.

ACTM will hold a celebration ceremony in two months in one of the Arab capitals that will be decided later to award the prizes to winners.
