Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) welcomed the first 20 students of the Class of 2023 at a dinner to introduce the students and their parents to members of the CMU-Q community. The students have been admitted to the university through the CMU-Q ‘Early Decision’ process, and this is the largest group of Early Decision students since CMU-Q introduced the process in 2017.

The students come from 13 high schools across Qatar, with the American School of Doha having the largest representation. The group includes 11 Qatari students, and is also the first to have students admitted to the highly selective Computational Biology Program through the Early Decision process. Welcoming the students and their parents, Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q, said: “You have worked very hard in high school, and we commend your dedication to your studies and extracurricular activities. In the next few months, whenever you feel anxious about the transition to university, I would like to reassure you: we chose you because you earned your place here at Carnegie Mellon. Savor every moment of the next four years.”

Saleh Al-Raisi (pictured), who graduated from CMU-Q’s Business Administration Program in 2014, had words of encouragement for the new students in his keynote address: “To be accepted to CMU is a challenge in itself,” he said. “This means that you demonstrated a height of excellence and a strong sense of character, which you will certainly build on during your time at CMU. Congratulations on your hard-earned accomplishment.” Al-Raisi, who is a corporate planning analyst at Nakilat and the current president of CMU-Q’s Alumni Chapter, went on to say: “My journey with CMUQ started eight and a half years ago, and it is still one of the richest life experiences I have had.”

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar is accepting applications for studies beginning in August 2019 in biological sciences, business administration, computer science, computational biology and information systems. The application deadline is February 1.
