The President of ConocoPhillips Qatar today pledged support to the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the American School of Doha (ASD). Gary Sykes, President, ConocoPhillips Qatar, visited the school accompanied by ConocoPhillips officials and was escorted around the premises by ASD Director, Dr. Deborah Welch.

After the visit, Mr. Sykes stated: “I am very happy to support next year’s celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the American School of Doha. ConocoPhillips’ support of ASD is a tradition that we have happily maintained for many years now; one that we hope to continue to benefit ASD and the Qatar community at large.”

He further added: “ConocoPhillips believes in investing in sustainable development in the communities in which we operate. In addition to our investment in university-level and higher-education programs, we give special attention to pre K-12 outreaches, specifically those that encourage careers in engineering and technology. ASD students have made it all the way to some of the world’s most prestigious universities including Harvard, WestPoint and Columbia.”

He concluded by stating: “ConocoPhillips’ SPIRIT values set the tone of our behavior with internal and external stakeholders, and in the communities in which we operate.  Our “SPIRIT” values are: Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation and Team Work.  They are at the foundation of our corporate commitment to dedicate our resources to sustainable development, both as the world’s leading exploration and production (E&P) company, and as a responsible corporate citizen.”

ASD Director Dr. Welch expressed that “ConocoPhillips Qatar’s generous support will enable the school to plan anniversary events that recognize 25 years of ASD’s contributions to Qatar. The school has played a significant role in the lives of many students and organizations. The celebration will take place in November 2013 and will feature a sculpture dedicated to the founders of the school, alumni events, a gala sponsored by the PTA, and activities that focus on the accomplishments of our current and former students. ConocoPhillips has shared the mission and vision that has helped make ASD a leading school in the region.”

Established in 1988 by former US Ambassador to Doha, Joseph Ghougassian, as the American International School in Doha, the American School in Doha expanded to offer preK-12 education in 1995 and acquired its current name in 1997. In addition to teaching its main curriculum in English, ASD offers its students the opportunity to study Arabic and Islamic studies as well as other languages, including French and Spanish.
