The Ministry of Development Planning & Statistics (MDPS) has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of May 2015. The CPI of May, 2015 is estimated at 104.39 showing an increase when compared to CPI of April 2015. And 0.87% compared to the CPI of May, 2014.

A M-o-M analysis of CPI [May, 2015 against April, 2015 indices] shows that there are two main groups where respective indices have risen namely: “Recreation and Culture” group is up by 5.09% , and “Food and beverages” by 0.04%. A decline in prices is noticed in the other groups namely : “Clothing and footwear” group by 0.21%, “Restaurants and Hotels” groups by 0.16% and “Furniture and household Equipment” by 0.08%.

Consumer Price Index during 2 [].jpgComparing the CPI of May, 2015 with the CPI of May, 2014 points a rise in the general index (CPI), by 0.87%. This price surge is primarily affected by the increasing prices in the nine groups namely: “Education” by 11.14%,“Tabacco” by 8.59%, “Transport” by 2.85% , “Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas” by 2.27%, “Restaurants and Hotels” by 0.74%, “Furniture and Household Equipment” and “Food and beverages” by 0.6% each. However, there has been a decrease in price levels in other groups namely: “Recreation and Culture” by 6.51% , “Miscellaneous goods and Services” by0.41% and “Clothing and footwear” by 0.17% . Figure (1) shows the monthly and annual comparison for CPI of April 2015.

The CPI of May, 2015 excluding “Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas” group stands at 102.94, showing a decrease of 0.71% compared to the index of April 2015 and an increase of 0.46% in comparison to the CPI of May, 2014. Table (2) presents CPI excluding “Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas” and figure (3) (pictured)  shows the Monthly percentage change of CPI with and without Rental component.
