The Ministry of Development Planning & Statistics (MDPS) has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of September, 2014. The CPI of September, 2014 is estimated at 118.9, showing a stability compared to the CPI of August 2014, and a 3.6% compared to the CPI of September 2013.

The stability of CPI of September, 2014 when compared to CPI of August 2014 has resulted from the combined effect of price changes recorded in the main groups: “Food, Beverages and Tobacco” increased by 0.5%, and “Rentals, Fuel & Energy*” by 0.6%. Whereas “Furniture, Textiles & Home Appliances” decreased by 0.1%, “Transport and Communication” by 0.4%, “Entertainment, Recreation & Culture” by 0.8%, and “Miscellaneous Goods & Services” by 0.3%. No change noticed in “Garments and Footwear” and “Medical care” groups. Table (1) presents CPI of September 2014, and figures (4) and (5) show the movement of monthly CPIs of “Food, Beverages and Tobacco” and “Rentals, Fuel and Energy*” groups.

The overall CPI of September, 2014, compared to the one of September, 2013 has increased by 3.6%. The price increases are observed in all of the groups: “Rentals, Fuel & Energy*” by 8.1% (mainly hikes noticed in rentals of residential buildings), “Furniture, Textiles & Home Appliances” by 5.2%, “Garments and Footwear” and “Transport and Communication” by 2.7% for each, “Miscellaneous Goods & Services” by 1.0%, “Food, Beverages & tobacco” by 0.9%, “Medical care” by 0.7%, and “Entertainment, Recreation & Culture” by 0.2%. The CPI of September 2014, excluding “Rentals, Fuel and Energy” group stands at 128.8, showing a decrease of 0.2% compared to the index of August 2014 and 1.9% in comparison to the CPI of September, 2013. Table (2) presents CPI excluding “Rentals, Fuel & Energy” and figure (3) shows the Monthly percentage change of CPI and CPI excluding Rental component.
