Golfer Jakub Hrinda, an alumnus of Doha College, won the recent Turkish Amateur Open at Gloria golf course in Belek. The tournament took place at Gloria Golf Course, the venue of the European Challenge tour for professional golfers, a fact that attracted a much stronger amateur line-up, making Jakub’s win even more significant.

Jakub won on with the score of -3 after a play-off, where he had to birdie the last hole to gain victory. Besides an invitation to play in Turkish Challenge Tour in spring 2019, Jakub also received a business-class ticket around the world, courtesy of main sponsor Turkish Airlines. Jakub is currently enjoying a gap year, and keeps very busy working on his golf, as well as completing one extra A Level exam on his own before starting college golf in August 2019. He will play in the NCAA 1st Division College golf in the USA, representing one of the academically strongest universities in the USA, namely the George Washington University. This is a highly selective private university, formed and sponsored by US Congress in Washington D.C.

He qualified for the event having won the Qatar Open that year, and has since become a multiple winner of the Faldo Series in the Middle East, Slovakia and Italy, and was a medallist in Faldo Series Grand Finals in Greenbrier and Mission Hills. In 2016, Jakub shared the podium of the Qatar Junior Open with fellow Doha College student and winner Mikkel Mathiesen, while his sister Laila Hrindova took the ladies’ top place. Laila, also a Doha College alumna, is a great golfer herself, and her talent won her a scholarship at Baylor University in Texas, where she now plays for one of the top US college teams.

Jakub has played in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, D+D Real Slovakia Challenge, The Golf Citizen Classic, Chagsha Championship, JR World Florida Challenge, and other tournaments, and of course most recently the Turkish Open. His upcoming schedule includes tournaments in South Africa, Malaysia and a few amateur entries into professional tournaments in the spring of 2019.
