Qatar continues to position itself as a family destination of choice in the GCC for Eid holidays with the cornucopia of shows and activities catered to children and families which have been attracting huge crowds.

If the sheer volume of visitors watching various shows in malls and other venues is any indication, a large number of visitors are enjoying this Eid’s line-up of events organised by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) under the ‘Eid Celebrations in Qatar’ programme. All the events staged at six participating malls and other organisations appeal to the entire family — from stage shows exclusive to each mall to rotating shows. The first few front row seats have been allocated for children ensuring them the best view and sometimes interaction with the characters.

One of the crowd-drawers is a production of Tarzan, which for the first time is running at City Centre Doha (CCD), one of the more popular malls in the country. It did not take long to fill the CCD’s indoor ice rink where a stage has been erected and around 600 seats installed. The 4pm Tarzan show, which was the first of three shows yesterday, was full house, which came as no surprise with the show’s high entertainment value. “My kids and everyone here are happy with the show. We have been coming back to Qatar because every year there is something new,” said Saad Nasser, a tourist from Saudi Arabia in the audience.

Saudi Arabia is Qatar’s top tourist source country with visitor arrivals reaching 640,584 from January to August this year — a nine percent increase compared to the same period last year. “Watching Tarzan and other characters live brings cheer to children more than just viewing the movie on screen. It’s a different and valuable experience when they can interact with the characters,” said Aditya, who came with his family. Shows in other malls have been seeing huge turnout since Monday, including Beauty & The Beast at Dar Al Salam mall; Flying Superkids at Al Khor Mall; Alvin and the Chipmunks at Ezdan Mall; Pirates from the Caribbean at Lagoona Mall; and Sinbad the Sailor at Hyatt Plaza.

Families also enjoy parades and shows which rotate around the participating malls, including African Drummers; Kids Magician; Funny Ball Performer; Circus Spectacle; Circus Bear and Clown; and Qatari Traditional Dance.  The Pearl-Qatar has also been offering multiple children’s shows nightly, including Barney; Dora; Finding Nemo; Frozen; Aladdin; Jungle Book; and Bubble show. Katara’s 50-minute spectacular ‘Sinbad the Sailor’ has been attracting hundreds of families and so it ‘Fafa Saves the Forest’ live children’s show at Qatar National Convention Centre main theatre. Souq Waqif, one of the preferred tourist destinations, is offering amusement rides at reasonable prices which have been a magnet to children.
