The first annual festival of dry and fresh dates, organised by the Ministry of Environment in co-operation with Mahaseel Company, began yesterday at Ezdan Mall, Gharrafa. Named Rutab, the festival, which will continue up to next Saturday, features 20 varieties of dates in addition to information about the plans to develop the date palm plantations. Al Khulas, Al Barhi, Al Kabab, and Khisab are among the dates exhibited. The opening of the festival was attended by officials of the Ministry of Environment who said that Qatar had realised as much as 70% self-reliance in the production of dates, which is a basic source of food in the Gulf countries.
