Under the patronage of its Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums (QM) announced the opening of the Youth Summer Residency Exhibition at the Fire Station. Running from the 29th November to 22nd December 2018 in Workshop 3, the exhibition is the result of a summer program designed to nurture and celebrate local young talent of the future with the help of the Fire Station’s Artists in Residence who have completed the programme.

Now in its second year, the Youth Summer Residency is an annual initiative held at the Fire Station and run in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Students are handpicked by the Ministry of Education following an annual exhibition and encouraged to develop their artistic and technical skills in a wide range of disciplines from painting and printmaking to mixed media and collage. This year 9 students were chosen to receive mentorship from a select group of the Fire Station’s previous Artists in Residence. The students each received guidance on a daily basis as well as interactive workshops covering a number of techniques and topics designed to enrich the students’ experience.

This year’s mentors were:

  1. Hisham Khalid - skills development and the discovery of fine art identity
  2. Rita Abou Eid - collage art around an abstract theme
  3. Paul Valentine -relief printmaking
  4. Adnan Siraj - acrylic painting on canvas
  5. Hana Nu’man Al Emadi, creating metal artworks

Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director of the Fire Station, commented: “We are delighted to be able to host this exhibition and am very grateful to the Ministry of Education for enabling us to run this program.I have been extremely impressed with the level of talent displayed by our young artists and it is fantastic that our Artists in Residence have been able to help guide them on their creative journeys. I am excited to be able to showcase our young artists and the result of their hard work and collaboration over the summer. It is very important that we are able to continue to support up and coming talent and continue to hone the skills of the next generation.”

This year’s students ranged from grade 9 to recent high school graduates from various schools and institutions. They included:

  • Safia Khalid Al Khayareen, Aisha Bint Abi Baker School

  • Maryam Abdulrahman Al Mannai, Roda Bint Mohammed School
  • Amna Al Asmar, Barzan School
  • Fatima Muhammed Twaim Al Hajri, Aisha Bint Abi Baker School
  • Noura Muhammed Twaim Al Hajri, Aisha Bint Abi Baker School
  • Mezna Muhammed Twaim Al Hajri, Texas A&M
