The Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar presents ‘Crossing Boundaries: Contemporary Art and Artists from South Africa’, curated by VCUQatar gallery director Jochen Sokoly and South African gallerist Ortrud Mulder on Wednesday, 26 January 2011. The opening reception will be preceded by a lecture entitled "A Fresh Look at a Century of South African Art" by Riason Naidoo, director of the South African National Gallery, at 6:00 PM at the atrium in VCUQatar. The event is open to the public.

The exhibition, ‘Crossing Boundaries: Contemporary Art and Artists from South Africa’, brings together a diverse group of contemporary artists  - Lien Botha, Nadja Daehnke, Hasan and Husain Essop, Svea Josephy, Sharlene Khan, Nomthunzi Mashalaba - whose work represents artistic practice in photography, mixed media, print, installation and text. It reflects discourses with culture, environment, society and self and provides an insight into contemporary post-Apartheid South Africa. The exhibition will be opened by the director of the South African National Gallery in Cape Town, Riason Naidoo following his opening lecture..

In his lecture, "A Fresh Look at a Century of South African Art", Mr. Naidoo focuses on modern and contemporary artists in South Africa with a particular reference to its post colonial and apartheid context, the subject of a recent exhibition at the National Gallery of South Africa in Cape Town.

South African born Riason Naidoo is a curator, writer and artist. He is currently director

of art collections for Iziko Museums of Cape Town responsible for the South African National Gallery and the Old Town House Museum. He has researched and curated internationally and published widely on South African art and society.

The exhibition is scheduled from 26 January to 5 March, 2011 at The Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar and is open Sundays to Thursdays, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or by prior appointment. A reception will be held at the gallery on 26 January 2011 following an opening lecture at 6:00 PM. The reception is open to the public.
