The Qatar Ministry of Interior (MoI) and Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) have received a prestigious award for ‘Best Public Awareness Campaign’ at the 3rd annual ITS & Road Safety Forum organized by IQPC in Doha, Qatar. The award, which is internally recognised by the International Road Federation, was made for their shared efforts to develop and launch Qatar’s national road safety brand ‘One Second!’

Commenting on the award, Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Al Thani, Deputy Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar said: “The ‘OneSecond!’ national road safety brand is a fantastic example of a public-private partnership that supports the goals of the Qatar 2030 national vision. At Maersk Oil, we are very proud to have worked so closely with the Ministry of Interior National Traffic Safety Committee, the General Directorate of Traffic and Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar), to develop the ‘OneSecond!’ national road safety brand. The unique partnership included the work by young VCUQatar designers who developed the creative concept for the 'One Second' visual identity.

Above and beyond being a responsible energy producer, Maersk Oil is committed to making a broader contribution to Qatar’s 2030 Vision and sustainable development goals. Our social investment activities are focussed on quality partnership programmes that can and will make a real and lasting impact to the lives of people in Qatar. ‘OneSecond!’ is a great example of this. Sheikh Faisal concludes: “We look forward to working with our partners and with other organisations in Qatar to further improve and enhance the ‘OneSecond!’ road safety programme in the months and years ahead and to ultimately reduce the number of deaths and injuries on Qatar’s roads”

‘One Second!’ was officially launched by Qatar’s Ministry of Interior on the 27th May 2013, and a number of road safety awareness campaigns have already been delivered under the unified national brand. Maersk Oil Qatar has supported a number of ‘OneSecond!’ programmes, including a child car seat campaign which focused on education and awareness about the importance of using seats belts and child seats for children in vehicles. The ‘Qatar baby car seats programme’ provided 7,000 baby car seats to families of new born babies at Hamad Women’s Hospital, and was accompanied by a nationwide media and awareness campaign. It also involved the training of 188 nurses at Hamad Women’s Hospital in the importance of using car seats and on distributing them to the families of new born babies.

School children are also a key focus as early education is important factor in developing awareness and understanding of road safety. A new road safety schools programme was launched called ‘Students for Road Safety’ which involves a state-of-the-art mobile driving simulator and schools programme for 12-18 year olds. The vision of the programme is that children become promoters and ambassadors of road safety at school and at home, and are better equipped with safer driving attitudes for when they become drivers themselves. By learning about road safety and safe driving behaviours, students will be provided with the knowledge, skills and qualities to help contribute to a safer present and future on Qatar’s roads, and to help reduce road accidents and fatalities. It aims to reach tens of thousands of students over the coming years.

‘One Second!’ already has a large following on social media and has achieved more than 20,000 followers on Facebook.
