Hamad International Airport (HIA), Qatar’s gateway to the world, has served a record 7.3 million passengers during the first quarter of 2015, representing a 17% increase from the number of passengers who travelled through the previous hub, Doha International Airport, during the same period in 2014.

In detail, HIA saw 7,360,308 passengers pass through its gates during the first quarter of 2015, with 2,589,403 passengers departing, arriving and transiting in January; 2,285,221 in February; and 2,485,684 passenger movements in March. The same period in 2014 saw 6,294,910 passengers travelling through the Doha International Airport, including 2,191,148 passengers in January; 1,973,823 in February; and 2,129,639 in March.

Cargo tonnage totalled 249,769 tonnes in the first quarter of 2015, representing a 9% increase, compared to 228,831 tonnes of cargo transported in the same timeframe in 2014. HIA has also seen an increase in aircraft movements with 49,208 movements during the first quarter of 2015, a 14% increase in aircraft take-off and landing at the airport, compared to 43,155 movements during same period last year. Commenting on the exceptional figures, Badr Mohammed Al Meer, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, said: “Statistics demonstrate that HIA has received more than 7 million passengers during the first quarter of 2015, which highlights Qatar’s rapid development and reinforces Qatar’s position as a global hub for air transport.”

HIA has also won three Skytrax 2015 awards at the Skytrax Airport Award Ceremony, held recently at the Passenger Terminal Expo 2015 in Paris. These include the Best Airport in the Middle East award, as well as the second position as the Best Airport in Performance and Services, and the ninth position as the World’s Best Airport Transit Services.
