In its second installment of the ongoing Joint Sustainability Research Seminars (JSRS) series, Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Science and Engineering (CSE) and Qatar Shell will focus on Integrated Onsite Industrial Water Treatment on March 14. The lecture will be the second in the three-part series, and will be delivered by Dr. Udeogu Onwusogh, who has extensive expertise in water treatment and sustainable development.

The seminar will provide students, staff, faculty, and other attendees – including members of the public – with insight on efforts undertaken to safely extract natural resources through more sustainable means. The guests will receive an overview of the Pearl GTL effluent treatment plant (ETP) that treats water using the Fischer-Tropsch process, and other alternative processes that secrete less pollution than traditional fossil fuels.

CSE is committed to higher education programs that seek to tackle present and future challenges in engineering, science, and technology through their multidisciplinary divisions in the fields of Life Sciences, Information and Computing Technology, and Sustainable Development. Dr. Mounir Hamdi, dean of CSE, said: “At CSE, we recognize the importance of a well-rounded education that integrates theoretical and practical components. We value our partnerships with leading institutions in the industry to provide our students with invaluable insight and opportunities in their professional lives. The Joint Research Seminar Series with Qatar Shell is a critical element of our vision to enhance the student experience by linking industry with academia, capitalizing on our partner’s expertise to achieve our shared goals.”

To be held at the Liberal Arts and Science (LAS) Building in Education City, the lecture will also provide guests with a unique opportunity to network with experts. In addition, they will receive an in-depth overview of the significant steps that the oil and gas leader is presently taking to minimize its carbon footprint, and build a more sustainable future. Dr. Udeogu Onwusogh is the water portfolio leader at the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Center. He has worked with the center to develop on existing research that seeks to find more efficient solutions in managing bio-sludge, salt, and excess water that is produced seasonally.Dr. Onwusogh Udeogu holds master’s and PhD degrees in environmental engineering from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

HBKU and Qatar Shell’s JSRS builds on the shared values to strengthen awareness about energy and environmental protection. The past lecture, given by Dr. DhruvArora, discussed conservation methods of preserving the environment currently undertaken by the energy sector. The next lecture, to be hosted in April, will discuss material and corrosion in the oil and gas industry.
