Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) today announced that Professor Peter Woodruff has been appointed as Chairman of Psychiatry; a key development for HMC as they work towards a transformation of mental health services in Qatar, in keeping with the National Mental Health Strategy 2013-2018.

In announcing the new appointment, HMC’s Managing Director, Hanan Al-Kuwari, PhD., emphasized: “As an organization, we greatly value the kind of expertise and experience that Professor Woodruff brings with him. Such an appointment is extremely important to us at a time when we are striving to ensure that HMC’s mental health care provisions are the best they can be to the benefit of the people of Qatar. We are very pleased to welcome Professor Woodruff who, alongside our existing specialists, will play an important part in our future mental health service developments.”

Professor Woodruff arrives from the University of Sheffield in the U.K. where he has been Professor of Academic Clinical Psychiatry and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, since 1999. There he set up the internationally renowned Sheffield Cognition and Neuroimaging Laboratory (SCANlab) and was Deputy Head of Neuroscience. His research interests include studies of the phenomenology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia, identifying mechanisms that lead to auditory hallucinations, and determining how these symptoms may be alleviated using new techniques and treatments.

In joining HMC, Professor Woodruff explained: “It is a pleasure to join the mental health team at HMC and to work with them in taking forward the aspirations of the National Mental Health Strategy. Additionally, I am convinced that wherever we are in the world, there needs to be a strong alliance and effective collaborations between Universities and Health Systems, which I am pleased to see is nurtured by the goals of HMC’s Academic Health System.”

Alongside appointing new, highly qualified experts in the field of mental health to join their existing Psychiatry Department, which is the main provider of specialist mental health care in the country, HMC are developing their mental health services to ensure that treatment options cater to the diversity of their patients and their individual treatment needs – including offering inpatient, outpatient, community and homecare options.
