In another attempt to enhance patient experience at hospitals, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has rolled several activities through its Community Affairs and Patient Engagement services. It helps patients and their families in different ways including providing emotional support and guidance. 

Patients and their families seeking support or guidance are encouraged to visit the Community Affairs and Patient Engagement office situated in the female Out Patient Unit of Hamad General Hospital (HGH), said Maitha Al Bouainain, Executive Director of Community Affairs and Patient Engagement at HGH. “A positive patient experience is related to better health outcomes. We support patients and families in every possible way to assure their comfort,” she told The Peninsula. “We work to reduce the gap between patient experience and expectations. We listen to patients and their families learn about their needs and expectations, then try to address them. We aim at reaching a situation which will not get a single complaint from patients,” she added.

Majority of Community Affairs and Patient Engagement services are delivered through a team of 500 volunteers registered with the HMC. The Community Affairs and Patient Engagement services is also planning to train the volunteers on protocols and procedures relating to infection control, fire and environmental safety and patient friendly practice. “We aim to build a team of volunteers and harness the goodwill of them in a manner that is safe and appropriate for the hospitalised people,” said Al Bouainain who is qualified in different streams of healthcare and has 35 years of experience in the field. 

Volunteers support patients in different ways like reading stories for hospitalised children and helping patients get a wheelchair or pair of clutches which they would need after getting discharged from the hospital. “At HMC we provide care that is respectful of, and responsive to, individual patient preferences, needs and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions,” said Bouainain. Community Affairs and Patient Engagement services also arranges activities across HMC’s network of hospital to mark events such as the Qatar National Day and National Sport Day. Those interested engaging with volunteer services also can register themselves at the Affairs and Patient Engagement office.
