With IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 kicking off on Friday, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced that it is well prepared to handle any medical cases and emergencies that may happen during the major event. The championships will continue until October 6 at Khalifa International Stadium. Marathons will be held at the Corniche.

Describing HMC as one of the main partners in the event, Deputy Chairman, Corporate Emergency Department, Dr Aftab Mohammad Azad said, “We started preparing for the event long back by doing a test event to make sure that our team is prepared to receive and manage medical cases from games.” According to him, they have a dedicated team and VIP protocol which is specialised to receive such cases 24/7 during this period. “We are ready to provide excellent medical care to all patients coming through this protocol as VIP patients. They will get the required medical care in timely and efficient manner.” Dr Azad added, “Our team, including specialised medical unit with high-level staff and equipment, will be at Doha Cornicheto tackle the cases on the spot.”

According to him, their team also includes the Ambulance Service which will transport the cases to the Trauma and Emergency Center. The new Trauma and Emergency Center is the largest in the region and is a significant expansion of trauma and emergency services in Qatar. In addition to a new Emergency Department, it also offers trauma, urgent and critical care services and features a dedicated ramp for ambulance arrivals at Hamad General Hospital (HGH). The facility also benefits from five trauma and emergency rooms which are fully equipped to be converted into mini operating theatres in the event of a mass casualty incident or an accident requiring immediate surgical intervention. Patients can then be rapidly and seamlessly transferred from there to the Trauma or Surgical Intensive Care Units as well as the operating theatres at HGH via the link bridge on the first floor.
