The management team of Marsa Malaz ​ Kempinski, The Pearl - Doha and Kempinski Residences & Suites, Doha took the initiative to switch their roles with front line employees for one day: the Cluster General Manager Mr. Wissam Suleiman became chef and cooked the lunch for the team, the directors and managers became stewards, waiters, housekeeping attendants, and other junior positions for the day.

“It was a great experience to be in this position” – said one of the managers – “I was a laundry attendant and I spent time very close to employees in the laundry and uniform room, learnt how the process works and got familiar with the operations, besides having the chance to speak to the team, observing their daily operation, challenges, listening to their personal stories. Our colleagues were thrilled to host me for the day and explained in detail their jobs with so much passion and pride!”

In the same way, employees were given the opportunity to become department heads for a day: a Spa Therapist became General Manager, held meetings with the Executive Committee (represented by other junior employees), attended the orientation training for new joiners, spoke to employees, listened to them, walked around the hotel to overlook operations. “It was so exciting, and I felt so important that day! At the same time, I would have never expected what a day as a General Manager would be!” she commented.

Mr Wissam Suleiman, Cluster General Manager, stated: “This initiative brought management and employees closer together, being in each other’s shoes allowed them realise what they experience during their daily jobs, and created a bridge between different departments and positions. I am sure this will enhance the mutual understanding and cooperation. It was a day full of fun and I was glad to see that everyone enjoyed it. Now they are already asking me when the next “SWITCH” will take place.”
