Lekhwiya yesterday crushed Umm Salal 3-0 to win the Qatar Stars League (QSL) title in their maiden appearance.

Playing with customary elan, Lekhwiya picked up three points to secure the top position on QSL standings. Lekhwiya have an unassailable tally of 48 points with only one round of matches to go in the 2010-2011 season that began in September last year.

In second position are Al Gharafa with 40 points with two matches to go whereas third-placed Al Rayyan have 39 points with a couple of games in hand. Bakari Kone (35), Aronel Dandani (45) and Mohammed Razzaq (57) scored the goals for Lekhwiya.

Lekhwiya coach Djamel Belmadi said: “I am not surprised. I was expecting to win the title because we have worked so hard in the season.” Belmadi added: “I can’t single out any player who helped us win the championship. This has been a team effort. All the players contributed in our championship win. I am very pleased about the performances of my players.”

The Lekhwiya coach said there were more things to come. “I can assure you this won’t be the only title for us. Lekhwiya fans will see us winning more trophies in the coming season. We have a very strong side. I have a very talented bunch of players,’ Belmadi said.

In the 6th minute, Kone fired a curling shot from the edge of the box. The ball dipped in the air and hit the crossbar, much to the disappointment of Lekhwiya fans. Some 20 minutes later, Kone broke free through three Umm Salal defenders but his shot was saved by Umm Salal goalkeeper Emad Aziz. In the 35th minute, Kone produced a neat move that brought up Lekhwiya’s first goal. Kone charged into Umm Salal box, left two defenders in his trail before calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Aziz.

Two minutes into added time, Lekhwiya produced another breath-taking goal. Kone, after charging into Umm Salal box, back-heeled a pass to Dandani, who fired a bullet that went through the hands of goalkeeper Aziz on the goal-line. Seven minutes into the second half, Umm Salal mid-fielder Saud Ghanem Salman went long-range with his left-foot but his swerving chip was blocked by Lekhwiya goalkeeper Baba Malick.

In the 57th minute, Lekhwiya wenyt 3-0 up. Dandani, positioned near the corner pole, chipped one for Razzaq, who neatly deflected ball past goalkeeper Aziz from close range.

Qatar Football Association president, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, presented the QSL trophy to Lekhwiya players.
