The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has issued a circular requiring restaurant owners to compel employees to comply with the health and safety requirements when preparing and delivering meals. The circular, posted on the ministry’s Twitter page, includes the following stipulations:

  • Measuring the staff members’ body temperature twice a day.
  • Requiring the staff to maintain a safe distance of 1.5m.
  • The employees should wash their hands regularly before and after preparing meals and processing payments, whether these are made in cash or by using cards.
  • Providing sterilisers and disinfectants to all staff members.
  • Providing staff with masks and gloves and compelling them, when preparing and cooking meals, to properly use them. Staff members shall also use gloves when handling tools that have been used by other people, and dispose of them properly.
  • Placing orders in suitable plastic bags to be disposed of before the order is handed over to the consumer. The circular refers to the ban on dine-outs and gathering of clients in restaurants, both indoor and outdoor. Takeaway orders from outside the store and delivery services (delivery companies) are exempted.

The MoCI has stressed the need for restaurant staff to comply with the health and safety requirements. The ministry will take all legal measures against violators in accordance with Law No 8 of 2008 on consumer protection.
