More than 100 music lovers enjoyed a wonderful evening of classical music at The St. Regis Doha, as the second of its Encore! concert series marked the centennial of the Titanic’s maiden voyage.

The sold-out audience - including Qataris, Ambassadors, expatriates, and students from Doha’s music schools – listened to top musicians play songs from the era in an elegant outdoor setting that recreated the luxury on-board the Titanic, which embarked from England for New York in 1912. The performance was held on the outdoor terrace by the pool where guests relaxed in St. Regis style under the stars and were looked after by the hotel’s signature butlers.

Well-known personality and journalist Shiulie Ghosh introduced the evening by talking about the history of the St. Regis brand, one of the world’s premier luxury hotels, and how its founder John Jacob Astor IV was the richest man on board the Titanic’s fateful trip.

Artistic Director of Encore! and international pianist Amira Fouad, led the Qatar Philharmonic musicians including Uzbeki violinists and twins Alie and Lilya Bekirova, Russian violist Victor Sumenkov, and Egyptian cellist Hassan Moataz El Molla.

The musical journey began with Edward Legar’s “Salut d’Amour,” and songs included waltzes, ballads, arias and tangos from famous European composers such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Fritz Kriesler, Franz Schubert, Pablo de Sarasate, Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss, Alexander Borodin, Johannes Brahms and Ángel Villoldo.

The concert ended with Sarah Flower Adams’ “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” which is believed to have been the last song played on the Titanic. The audience followed with a standing ovation to the musicians.

“We were delighted to perform under the stars on the elegant terrace of The St. Regis Doha to a standing ovation,” said Amira Fouad. “The response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to inviting you all to our next concert.”

Encore! is curated by Qatar Music & Arts, and is supported by Qanas Productions.  Sponsors included PETROTEC, Yamaha, Pronovias , Walker & Davies and Giovanni Galli. Music lovers can look forward to the exciting 2013 season of Encore!concerts at The St. Regis Doha.
