Maersk Oil Qatar and its Action on Diabetes (AOD) partners were out of the office and getting active at Aspire Park yesterday for National Sports Day. Over 1000 employees, their families and members of the public took part in fitness activities, promoting healthy living and regular exercise, while learning about one of the nation’s biggest health conditions, diabetes, and how to prevent it.

Now in its 4th year, National Sports Day aims to help realise His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani’s vision for a healthy Qatar. In support of this, Maersk Oil initiated ‘Action on Diabetes’ in 2011. In partnership with the Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar Diabetes Association – part of the Qatar Association, the Primary Health Care Corporation, and Novo Nordisk, the world’s leading provider of diabetes care, AOD is helping those at risk to avoid the condition, while supporting people already living with diabetes to better manage their health.

Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Al-Thani, Deputy Managing Director, Maersk Oil Qatar said: “As a safe and responsible employer, Maersk Oil places great importance on supporting an active and healthy organisation, running regular sports activities for our staff. Under the wise leadership of His Highness the Emir and His Highness the Father Emir, Sports Day gives us the opportunity to encourage the wider population to try new sports and activities to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle – to help avoid diabetes and lifestyle-related illnesses – helping to build a healthier Qatari nation.”

Dr Abdulla Al-Hamaq, Executive Director, Qatar Diabetes Association - Qatar Foundation (QDA) said: “Qatar has one of the highest incidence rates of diabetes in the world, with 17% of the population with the condition or at risk of developing it. By running diabetes awareness campaigns and offering screening and consultation about the associated risks and symptoms at big events like Sports Day, we aim to reduce this statistic and to improve the lives of thousands.”
