An alarmingly high percentage of deaths in Qatar are attributed to road accidents, which translates to more than 200 deaths per year.

These facts -- combined with photographs, videos and detailed reports on local traffic safety issues -- paint a sobering picture of Qatar's erratic driving culture, all of which are exposed on a new website called Qatar Behind WheelsThe multimedia investigative project is part of the journalism program at Northwestern University in Qatar. Eleven students were divided into teams and asked to produce pieces over a five-week period in early 2011.

Qatar Behind the Wheel identifies the main players in Qatar’s road safety efforts and delves into whether awareness programs are working. Through interviews with local traffic experts, drivers and car accident victims, the website explores what contributes to Qatar’s dangerous driving environment. The web address for Qatar Behind Wheels is qataraccidents.org.
