Over 100 students from Northwestern University Qatar (NU-Q) took part in a charity walk on Saturday 18th, organised by Educate A Child, a global programme of Education Above All (EAA), and NU-Q. The symbolic five-kilometer walk took place at Katara Cultural Village, and was marked by milestones representing the distance which children in difficult geographies around the world must walk in order to reach their nearest available school. The one-hour walk was designed to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by children to have access to an education.

Students from the EAA Youth Advocates group, NU-Q alumni, W Doha Hotel staff and Qatar Charity staff, as well as school children from local schools in Doha participated in the event. Well-known Qatari footballers Fahad Al Shammari and Adel Lami showed their support by participating in the walk, sharing personal stories and telling them out issues faced by out of school children worldwide. The Grand Hyatt Doha, the St Regis Doha and the W Doha Hotel donated gifts to the Educate A Child raffle which took place after the walk, where prizes which included spa treats and overnight stays were given away to participants.

It was great to see the enthusiastic participation from students, partners and the local schools. We hope that this event will help the general public appreciate the great difficulties that are faced by millions of children around the world, and why it is so important that we keep pushing to secure access to basic primary education for out of school children’.
