More than 200 people attended the University of Calgary in Qatar’s (UCQ) annual Open House event at the Al Rayyan campus on Saturday.

“It is wonderful to see such great interest in nursing and to welcome so many prospective students and their families to UCQ. Open House is a chance to explore the amazing opportunities available in our nursing programs,” said Jennie Seder, Student Services Officer and event organizer. Throughout the day eager high school students and their families met members of UCQ’s acclaimed Canadian nursing faculty, discussed sponsorship opportunities with UCQ’s partners – Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, and Qatar Biobank for Medical Research -- and learned more about a hands-on, evidenced based nursing education.

As well, Nursing Student Society of Qatar (NSSQ) members were on hand inspire interested students and their families with their personal stories of why they chose to study nursing.  Says top UCQ BN student, Lea Jabonete, “I wanted to study nursing because I wanted to THINK like a nurse! Nurses think holistically and critically when it comes to patient care. There is a way of looking at challenges that is unique to the nursing profession, and I wanted to be able to do that.”

“Showing first hand the enthusiasm of students like Lea, the clear commitment of faculty to fostering the best educational experience for students, and the unfailing support of UCQ’s partners to nursing education in Qatar, proved to be a winning combination,” remarked Craig Wood, Director of Student Services. “We were delighted to receive 115 applications at Open House.” UCQ is the only university in Qatar to have an exclusive focus on nursing education and the nursing profession is rising in popularity. As a result, the post diploma BN program is now full for 2016; however, places do remain open to qualified applicants in the four-year BN program and in the MN programs.
