Ooredoo celebrated the Qatari tradition of Garangao by bringing smiles to families and children at Souq Waqif, as part of the company’s Alrabaa (Friends) campaign during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Observed on the 14th Day of the Holy Month, Garangao is a children’s festival that is part of the rich heritage of the Arabian Gulf region. Children knock on doors asking for sweets, and sing a traditional Garangao song. Shortly after the Ishaa evening prayer, Ooredoo’s Alrabaa, a group of seven characters, along with volunteers from Ooredoo and the Qatar community, distributing sweets, singing songs and taking photos with children and families.

Fatima Al Kuwari, Director Community and Public Relations, said: “Our Alrabaa campaign has seen a great response on social media. While the Alrabaa have spread joy among hundreds of people in Qatar through their activities, the real impact has come online. Thousands of people in Qatar and around the world have enjoyed behind-the-scenes photos and videos of Alrabaa’s journey of doing good deeds.”

Ooredoo’s website at www.ooredoo.qa and its social media pages including Facebook at www.facebook.com/OoredooQatar and Twitter @OoredooQatar, have been some of the most popular pages during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

People have eagerly followed the Alrabaa’s adventures, including helping people carry groceries and hail taxis at Villaggio Mall, playing sports with labourers, giving toys to children at Hamad Medical Corporation, and distributing Iftar boxes at the Ramadan Cannon area.

Recognising the reach of social media, Ooredoo also launched its first Garangao contest on Instagram. People who post Garangao-related photos, and tag them with @OoredooQatar or #Alrabaa, will be entered into a drawing for one of three BlackBerry Q10smartphones. The deadline is 25 July 2013, and winners will be announced on Ooredoo’s Instagram account on Sunday, 28 July 2013.

Coming up, the Alrabaa will offer encouragement for people on the Corniche on the 23rd day of the Holy Month, perform good deeds at the Al Khor Mall on the 29th day of the Holy Month, and take children from Dhreima (Qatar Orphan Foundation) to Gondolania at the Villaggio Mall on the 3rd day of Eid Al-Fitr.

Complementing the Alrabaa are charity initiatives including “Sharing Spheres” at Villaggio Mall for donations of goods, and enabling Nojoom members to donate Nojoom Points to charity. Ooredoo has also pledged to donate 1 dh per local call to charity during the Holy Month.
