International law firm, Pinsent Masons, has held an exclusive quiz event as part of the firm’s ongoing celebrations to commemorate International Women’s Day. The event, held in partnership with the Qatar Professional Women’s Network, hosted women from a range of industries including construction, finance, and energy as well as a number of SMEs.  The evening consisted of networking, a keynote speech and a topical quiz with a prize for the winning table.

Delivering the keynote speech at the event was Maryam Al- Bishri, Chair of the “Women in Energy: Society of Petroleum Engineers” who discussed this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Balance for Better”.

Maryam spoke about her experience in dealing with the gender gap in her industry, including the differing approaches employed by women in regards to developing meaningful commercial relationships; the importance of working alongside supportive male colleagues and mentors, her advice for young women wanting to work in sectors that are traditionally male dominated and how to deal with challenging situations related to gender in the workplace. Maryam also urged attendees to make individual promises to themselves in support of the “Balance for Better” movement.

The theme of the evening’s quiz was “Inspirational Women”.  Featuring a number of questions on female pioneers in literature, politics, business, tech and science, the quiz also implored guests to consider continuing issues around gender parity in global businesses including the number of female CEOs in Fortune 500 companies and pay discrepancies between male and female Chief Executive Officers. Commenting on the event, Pamela McDonald, Associate at Pinsent Masons said, “Pinsent Masons is recognised as an industry leader in regard to diversity and inclusion, and we are dedicated to driving the change towards gender equality in the legal sector and in all of the industries in which we work. We hope that our events will help increase dialogue around equality in the workplace.”

Pinsent Masons offers flexible and agile working as part of its drive to attract and retain top female legal talent across its Middle East offices. Since 2016, 44% of partner promotions globally at Pinsent Masons have been women, whilst females make up almost 50% of the firm’s board membership. The company has also pledged to reach a target of 30% female partners by 2020. This year’s quiz night forms part of Pinsent Masons’ initiative “Middle East Female Future Forum” – a series of events that support the firm’s ongoing drive to advance, inspire and empower female leaders in the region. The series, which aims to challenge gender parity, is part of Pinsent Masons wider efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the workplace - with a focus on those working in the legal field.
