The pioneering role played by the State of Qatar in developing gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology was highlighted yesterday at a press conference in Doha, in preparation for the city hosting the inaugural World GTL Congress.

Held under the patronage of his Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman & Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum (QP), the congress will witness one of the industry’s largest assemblies of international experts and government representatives when it takes place on 13-15 January 2013 at the St. Regis Doha.

Organised by IQPC (the International Quality & Productivity Center), with QP supporting the three-day gathering as the host organization, the congress will take place at a time when GTL is poised to become the fuel of the future. Furthermore, the event will underline Qatar’s place at the helm of the global GTL industry.

“Our strong support to industry events, such as the World GTL Congress, is in line with QP’s objective to continuously contribute to the full development of the world’s oil and gas sector, and it also reflects our firm commitment to the continued growth of the global GTL industry,” said Mr. Ali Ahmed Ali Thani Al-Suwaidi, Head of Events of QP.

“The fact that the first-ever edition of this event will be held here in Doha effectively highlights the State of Qatar’s preeminent position as the world’s GTL capital. This also underscores the country’s leading role in further promoting the development of the industry as GTL products continue to be widely used worldwide,” he added.

Rob Sherwin, Corporate Affairs General Manager and Deputy Chairman of Qatar, which is the host sponsor of the event, said, “We are delighted to be supporting the World GTL Congress which highlights Qatar’s bold vision in adopting new technologies to respond to the global demand for high quality liquid hydrocarbon. Shell and Qatar Petroleum strengthened their long term partnership by jointly delivering the world’s largest Gas to Liquids plant Pearl GTL which cements Qatar’s position as the GTL capital of the world. We are proud that we could use our technology and project management capabilities to support Qatar’s vision for the future of its energy industry.”

The World GTL Congress heralds the first annual meeting for global GTL stakeholders and industry experts. It will focus on strengthening international cooperation in order to enhance the commercialisation of remote stranded gas through GTL technology, and will explore the impact of GTL products on the environment and on the economies of host countries.

Some of Qatar’s most successful companies, along with their international counterparts, have joined hands with IQPC to support the hosting of the congress.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the interest of some of Qatar’s premier organizations who are partnering with us for the first ever World GTL Congress. Over the three days of conference and breakout workshops, leading industry experts will discuss the most pressing strategic issues relating to GTL’s legal and financial framework, and develop policies that will help drive the development of the industry. The congress will also feature a world-class line up of international GTL visionaries who will showcase technological innovations and offer solutions to the challenges facing the region’s GTL industry.
