HE the Minister of Public Health and Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Health Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani and his accompanying delegation arrived in Geneva on Saturday to participate in the sixty-fourth session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) Conference which will open today and continue for 9 days.

The participation of the State of Qatar in the 64 session of the World Health Assembly Conference assumes special importance as Qatar is a candidate for the membership of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Executive Board which elections will be held on Friday. HE Al Qahtani, who is also Chairman of the current session of the Arab Health Ministers Council's Executive Board and the 71st Conference of the GCC Health Ministers Council, and his accompanying delegation will take part in a number of international and regional conferences, to be held on the sidelines of the WHA Conference namely the 71st Conference of GCC Health Ministers Council, the 36th session of the Arab Health Minister's Council and meeting of the Council's Executive Board.

The Conference of the GCC Health Ministers Cooperation, scheduled to be held on Tuesday, will discuss a host of issues including the fight against non-communicable diseases, occupational health, eradication of polio, drug pricing and the Saudi initiative to combat AIDS in GCC states. Meanwhile meetings of Arab Health Ministers Council will discuss health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, the unified address of Arab Health Ministers Council before the General Assembly of the World Health Organization, initiative to improve maternal health in the Arab region, developments of health and humanitarian situation in Libya, health conditions in Sudan as well as the formation of the Executive Office of the Arab Health Ministers Council.

The sixty-fourth session of the World Health Assembly Conference - the highest decision-making body of WHO - will discuss the topics on the agenda as well as issues related to budget management and administrative management of the World Health Organization The agenda includes discussion of the report of the Executive Board and the election of its members as well as the address of Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization.
