Qatar Airways hosted a unique celebration of the traditional mid-Ramadan children’s festival Garangao with its employees and their families. The celebration took place on the evening of 30 June 2015 in Regency Halls, Doha, where 600 children participated and enjoyed the occasion. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy traditional foods, games and activities all associated with this time-honoured Qatari festival.

To mark the halfway point of the fasting month, children were encouraged to knock on the doors of each house in the ‘mock’ neighbourhood. On this night, children walk around their neighbourhood singing traditional songs that mark the occasion and receive gifts and bags of sweets from their elders. Along the way, the children met with residents who told their stories and they sang Garangao songs, as well as receiving delicious treats. Ms. Nabeela Fakhri, Senior Vice President Human Recourses Employee Services in Qatar Airways said: “We were delighted to host this celebration for our staff and their families, as Garangao holds a special place in the hearts of the Qatari people. We are proud to be able to share this aspect of Qatari culture and heritage with our colleagues, particularly those who will be celebrating Garangao for the first time.”

Guests were also able to sample traditional Qatari food and beverages courtesy of local Qatari entrepreneurs. Those present at the Garangao event also enjoyed the rhythms of Garangao songs and music and parted with memorable pictures from the Qatar Airways customised photo-booth. The airline’s Qatari employees played an important role in planning and executing the event. Three of the carrier’s Qatari summer interns developed the creative concept, event branding, traditional characters and stories.
