Qatar Airways will resume flights to Washington DC and New York today after cancelling its services to these two US cities following closure of JFK and IAD airports due to Hurricane Irene. A Qatar Airways statement on its website said its Doha – Washington DC flight (QR51) Washington DC - Doha flight (QR52) will be on schedule today.

Similarly, the national carrier’s New York service (QR83) and Doha flight from JFK (QR84) will also maintain their schedule today. Yesterday, Qatar Airways had cancelled both its Washington DC and New York services as Hurricane Irene moved up US East Coast, disrupting flights arriving and departing New York (JFK) and Washington, DC (IAD) airports.

Strong hurricane warnings over the weekend forced US airport authorities to close the three major airports in the New York area — LaGuardia, JFK International and Newark Liberty International — resulting in the cancellation of more than 6,000 flights in the US alone.
