Qatar Airways, in partnership with Oryx International School, awarded category winners of a children’s art competition that was held at the school during November and December. The competition, themed “Happiness in my world”, attracted an overwhelming response of more than 500 submissions across four age groups of: 2-4 years old; 5-7 years old; 8-12 years old; and 13-16 years old.

Children of Qatar Airways staff, and Oryx School students were invited to participate in the many activities designed to promote greater understanding of ways to support themselves and one another in this important area. The special award ceremony held at the school on Thursday 13 December marked the culmination of months of work by children of all ages. An overall winner was also awarded with all entries judged by a panel made up of Qatar Airways staff.

Qatar Airways Group Medical Director, Dr. John Roberts, said: “Encouraging an awareness of potential problems and the practices that can lead to greater emotional wellbeing is the main focus of this competition. We are delighted that so many children, teachers and parents have become actively engaged in this subject in a positive and open way. By providing children with awareness and coping tools, we are setting a course to raise a generation of mentally healthy adults. That is far more positive for our community-of-the-future than trying to remedy mental health problems later on.”

The drawing competition was part of an integrated programme initiated by the airline’s Medical Division to mark World Mental Health Day on 10 October this year, in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). The programme’s launch event was a full-day ‘Mental Health Awareness’ workshop launched by Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, and was followed by a series of workplace and school-based events each targeting education and awareness of mental health issues. Under H.E. Mr. Al Baker’s leadership, the airline has launched a variety of wellbeing initiatives through its Medical and Occupational Health and Safety Divisions, to meaningfully engage with and support staff and their families, and enhance quality of life.
