Century 21, the company that manages and operated the West End Park, on Tuesday announced the hosting of first-ever triangular women’s one-day and Twenty20 championship in Qatar from Jan 7-25. To be held at the West End Park, the championship is being organized under the patronage of His Excellency Mr. Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali, Minister of Youth and Sports in the State of Qatar.

Women’s International Teams from the Pakistan Cricket Board, Cricket South Africa and Cricket Ireland will be participating in the championship, which will be played at the Cricket Stadium at the West End Park. The stadium has a capacity of 14,000 spectators. Teams will compete for precious ICC ranking points ahead of major events such as the ICC Women’s World Cup; ICC Women’s World Twenty/20.

The Championship will include 7 One Day International and 7 Twenty/20 Cricket matches. This is the first championship ever to be sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC), a huge achievement and historic moment for sport in Qatar. 

Giving details about the tournament, Chairman of Century 21, Mr. Mana Ibrahim al Mana said this is the first time Qatar will host International Women’s Cricket Championship. “The event will provide a perfect opportunity for cricket lovers of Qatar to enjoy some scintillating cricket in a festive atmosphere and will promote values of fair play and the spirit of cooperation among all communities in Qatar,” Mr. Mana added.

“The forthcoming tournament is more than a cricket contest in the sense that it will positively contribute towards the growing relations between the competing countries, “said Mr. Mana. According to Mr. Mana, cricket is popular sport among the large Asian communities in Qatar, and the women’s cricket tournament will be definitely be a treat for all cricket lovers in the country. He said the tournament has received encouraging commitment from institutions and local bodies in making this tournament possible.

“Qatar has invested significantly in to building a world class stadium to meet the National Sports Strategy objectives for cricket and the West End Park Cricket Stadium is equipped to attract the world’s leading cricket nations with superb playing and technical facilities on-site” Mr. Mana said. Mr. Mana further added that fans will experience a fantastic match day experience. “The hosting of the International Cricket Women’s championship demonstrates Qatar’s commitment in patronizing the growth of the sport in Qatar. The tournament is one major step in making the sport popular to all the communities in Qatar,” said Mr. Mana.
