Qatari planners met here yesterday and decided to launch a staggering 200 projects in different areas by the first quarter of next year, saying these ventures would herald the start of preparations for the 2022 World Cup Soccer.

“Decks are cleared for the launch of the above projects as part of the National Development Strategy (NDS) 2011-16,” said Dr Ibrahim and Ibrahim, from the General Secretariat for Development Planning (GSDP).

He was addressing members of the task teams that have been set up by the GSDP for these projects at a workshop held here yesterday, reports Qatar News Agency (QNA).

The NDS is part of the preparations for the 2022 World Cup, he said, adding: “We must begin working on a war footing.” Present was Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor Al Thani, GSDP’s general manager.

Health and education have been identified as key sectors for development and have together been allocated 72 of the nearly 200 projects.

The health sector takes the cake with a total of 35 projects while education walked away with the 27 development ventures.

Roads, sewage and other primary infrastructure development projects have been accorded third priority having been allocated as many as 22 projects.

While the key economic diversification effort has also been given due importance as 20 projects have been earmarked for it and to boost the private sector.

Some 11 projects relate to environment, whereas 10 are linked to social security schemes.

The GSDP is the cardinal planning and coordination agency that actively coordinates with different ministries and government agencies to plan and implement development projects.
