Qatar Museums is pleased to congratulate the talented photographer that has been named as the winner in the inaugural Qatar Museums’ Equestrian Photography Competition. The winner, named Sharil Babu, took and developed an inspiring, award-winning photograph that successfully captured the essence of the pride of Qatar – the Arabian horse.

Under the visionary guidance of its Chairperson HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums, the body responsible for developing, promoting and sustaining Qatar’s cultural sector, invited amateur and professional photographers to submit images that celebrate the role that horses have played in Arabic art, as well as their contribution to Qatar’s heritage and culture.

The judging panel included Mohammad Bin Salem Al Abdulla from the QREC, Abdulrahman Obeidan from the Qatar Photographic Society and Tamim Al Yafaei, from H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani’s office, who collectively judged more than one hundred entries that were received, taken at horse races hosted by the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC) in January 2015. The competition was open to photographers of all levels, from novice to professional, as part of Qatar Museums’ commitment to nurturing emerging artistic talent.

A total of 20 entries were shortlisted but Sharil Babu impressed judges with his shot of the racehorse Ghizwan, a powerful Arabian horse and winner of the L/B P/A MAIDEN PLATE race that took place on 7th January. Both the winning and shortlisted entries have been displayed at a special exhibition held at the HH Emir 24th International Equestrian Sword Festival, in celebration of QREC’s 40th Anniversary. The winner will have another opportunity to display his photography skills by capturing the action at the famous Racing and Equestrian event in France, Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.
