Organized by the Barwa and Qatari Diar Research Institute (BQDRI), the conference developed a platform through which a diverse range of topics and initiatives could be explored, including the introduction of the Qatar Sustainability Assessment System (QSAS) which aims to quantify green building practices. Salah Nezar, QPM’s MEP Manager and Sustainability Services Leader delivered a speech regarding “The Path Towards Net-Zero Energy Building in the GCC” which stimulated discussions pertaining to carbon-neutral solutions throughout the region. Central to Salah Nezar’s topic of discussion, was how modern developments enable companies to implement integrated construction approaches that achieve Net-Zero energy buildings, and the importance of shifting away from sustainability concepts, towards measurable environmental goals within the GCC.

“Today, sustainability goes above and beyond slogans,” commented Mr. Nezar. “We need to realize the interconnected nature of our decisions, and how implementing intelligent solutions now, will resonate throughout future generations. Recognizing the critical challenges facing the region is part of the process of change. However, it is important for us to understand that the next stage of development should be demarcated by measurable strategies and practices that act as a point of reference for all organizations.”

Salah Nezar is a highly regarded sustainability specialist with more than 20 years of international experience in delivering award winning projects such as the Zero-Energy Tower in Guangzhou in China; the United Nation Capital Master Plan in New York City; the Madagascar House at the Bronx Zoo, and the new Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai .In 2007 Salah was awarded the AIA Sustainability Urban Planning Award. He also received in 2010 ASHRAE- RAL (Region At Large) Award for Sustainability Excellence.
