The seventh annual Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy concluded in Doha this week with a luncheon hosted by ExxonMobil Qatar and Qatar University (QU).

The academy is an intensive professional development program for math and science teachers that was established in 2012 by ExxonMobil Qatar and QU’s National Center for Education Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. It was launched to foster science, technology, education and mathematics (STEM) learning at an early age in Qatar’s education system. This year, 50 third to sixth grade teachers from Qatar’s government schools, Teach For Qatar (TFQ) fellows and education specialists from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education participated in the program.Their efforts and engagement were recognized during the luncheon, which was attended by several senior representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, QU, and TFQ.

The overall purpose of the academy is to enable teachers to better deliver math and science teaching by ensuring that they are well qualified in their particular specialism and able to convey enthusiasm for their subjects, inspiring students to become motivated learners. Six Doha-based educators and three instructors from the United States worked with the teachers to develop their subject knowledge and skills through specialized hands-on training.

A total of 310 teachers have taken part in the seven academies ExxonMobil Qatar and QU have provided over the years. These teachers are expected to reach over 13,000 students, creating a far reaching ripple effect on learning in Qatar’s schools. “It is wonderful to see another Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy take place in Doha,”said Alistair Routledge, President and General Manager for ExxonMobil Qatar. “With the help of our partners, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Qatar University, the outcomes of the academy have become increasingly positive year after year.”

The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy provides teachers with the knowledge and pedagogical skills they will need to ensure that students have access to a quality education that will help prepare them for success in the 21st century by focusing on STEM subjects as essential components of a thriving modern economy,” added Routledge.

Dr. Abdullah Abu Tineh, Director, National Center for Educational Development- NCED at Qatar University said during the luncheon “It gives us great pleasure to celebrate the extraordinary relationship that Qatar University’s National Center for Educator Development shares with ExxonMobil Qatar with every successful year of the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. The academy highlights ExxonMobil’s commitment to supporting STEM education programs in Qatar, as do the Qatar University ExxonMobil Research Scholars Program and the academic chair in Science and Technology - our other joint programs. ExxonMobil also contributes to several other education programs and initiatives through strategic partnerships with Qatar’s universities, colleges and organizations."

The academy has been providing our teachers with a diverse toolbox of methods and approaches that inspirethe effective teaching of STEM subjects in their classroomssince 2012, and we are grateful for this support. These teachers will play a significant role in contributing to the education system,” she added.
